Chapter 23
Project Code Name: Nemesis
After some physical anesthesia, the zombies finally quieted down, and Wesker then reported to Tony.
"Boss, all the test subjects have been isolated. The next step is to conduct genetic analysis to study the source of the mutation. In addition, I plan to order some more isolation equipment and upgrade the safety measures to prevent the test subjects from getting out of control."
"You can handle the arrangements, just keep it confidential. You should understand all of this. The equipment needs to be the best. If it's not available on the market, you can have Stark manufacture it. I only ask that we produce results as soon as possible. The initial research direction is to make it controllable and weaponized."
As he spoke, Tony took out two more test tubes containing fresh blood, handed them to Wesker, and instructed him:
"These two test tubes are the same as the previous ones. They contain the root cause of all these changes: the T-virus. Please be careful during the research. Although this time it only shows blood transmission, it has a history of airborne transmission."
After Tony's introduction, Wesker's hands, which were about to reach out to take the test tube, suddenly trembled slightly. However, he still respectfully accepted the test tube and answered crisply:
"Okay, boss, don't worry."
After a little thought, Wesker's fear of the virus was overshadowed by what Tony had said when assigning tasks. From Tony's words, it's not hard to deduce that Tony didn't want to directly manage the company, and naturally wouldn't keep a close eye on it, which meant that Wesker had a lot of authority.
"Boss, should we give the project a code name?" Of course, Wesker wouldn't skimp on showing the respect due to the project.
Tony thought for a moment, and since they already had Umbrella and Wesker, he might as well just copy them.
"Let's call it Project Nemesis."
"A fantastic name, boss is brilliant," Wesker immediately flattered.
Tony was also very satisfied with Wesker's attitude. That's why they say emperors like treacherous ministers; at least Wesker's attitude was upright and he provided the right emotional value.
"Do a good job, I believe in you." After saying these words of comfort, Tony turned to leave Umbrella.
"Take care, boss, I'll see you out." Wesker escorted Tony out of the company, standing at the door and watching Tony drive away until he disappeared at the end of the road before rushing back to the lab to organize the research and get to work.
Tony, driving the car, assigned tasks to Jarvis, whom he always carried with him.
"Raise the monitoring of Umbrella Biosciences to the highest level. Notify me immediately of any abnormalities. Also, keep a close eye on Wesker. Report any unusual behavior from him immediately."
Since it's called Wesker now, we have to keep a close eye on it. We don't want it to backfire again and cause some kind of apocalypse or biohazard. What would we get out of enjoying it then, since we'd just reaped the benefits of Stark Industries' huge business?
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Eric, who had accepted the mission, was happily carrying out the cleanup operation; the money was too easy to earn.
The squadron's pilot maneuvered the armed helicopter, hovering in the air. Eric held the machine gun, the muzzle firing incessantly, spitting out blue flames, while spent cartridges clattered and fell into the cabin.
The area below, which appeared to be a stronghold of the Ten Rings Gang, had been reduced to a dangerous building under machine gun fire, with bricks and tiles constantly falling down.
In the courtyard of the stronghold, the corpses of the Ten Rings Gang lay scattered about, along with several headless corpses carrying RPGs.
These headless corpses were actually the most intelligent ones. As soon as the plane appeared, they immediately found RPGs and wanted to shoot it down. But without exception, as soon as they ran out of the house, snipers on higher ground in the distance fired bullets.
The bullet hit him squarely in the head, and then his head exploded like a watermelon with a bang.
Without any means of air defense, the people in the stronghold were like lambs to the slaughter under the strafing of armed helicopters.
Finally, the stronghold could not hold on any longer, and with a loud bang, the stronghold collapsed completely.
After circling once more and confirming there were no survivors, the armed helicopter slowly landed on an open area nearby, with snipers and reserve teams approaching from a distance.
"Wow, this is awesome! Stark's sniper rifle is amazing. It's powerful, and at short range, you don't even need to worry about wind speed. You can kill someone the moment they peek out." The sniper hugged the Stark sniper rifle so tightly that he didn't want to let go, and he almost wanted to kiss it a couple more times.
Upon hearing this, Eric sternly criticized, "Don't be careless. If you need to hit someone in the chest, hit them in the chest. Hitting them anywhere will kill them anyway. Don't seek thrills; the mission comes first."
Seeing Eric's serious expression, the sniper immediately dropped his playful grin. Eric was quite respected in the squad; after all, he was capable, ruthless to himself, and would get tattoos done by himself all the time. Who wouldn't be afraid of someone like that?
Of course, they weren't too scared, or scared to the point of being terrified. There was still a certain camaraderie among the team members, and at this moment, a comrade on the side spoke up to ease the atmosphere.
"Don't be so serious. You seemed to be having a lot of fun just now. I wanted to play with the machine gun for a bit, but you wouldn't let me."
Hearing his comrade reveal his secrets, Eric couldn't keep a serious expression anymore, and he grinned, showing his bright white teeth.
"Alright, everyone just needs to be more careful in the future."
"That's right, smile more. It's rare to have such a fun mission." The group immediately started laughing and joking.
Someone seized the opportunity to suggest, "Boss, how about we use one of those missiles? I've never even touched the control panel before, and besides, that's Jericho; it costs several million to procure."
Eric said irritably, "Do you want the US military to come and see what we've done? This is a black operation, we have no authorization at all. If we get caught, no one will help us, and Stark Industries won't care either."
Eric's reminder made everyone realize that although they appeared to be upholding justice and eliminating terrorists, they were actually doing so.
But to put it another way, they committed massacres in a sovereign country (though the sovereignty is currently unclear and they are still at war). If they were caught, neither the United States nor Stark would admit it.
In this situation, the best outcome would be to be skinned alive by the US military and return home naked to await the next uncertain CIA mission.
In a worse scenario, they would be shot dead by the US military and left to rot in the wilderness, with no one to collect their bodies, eventually being eaten piece by piece by vultures.
Seeing that the atmosphere had become somewhat tense again, Eric realized he had spoken too harshly and wanted to ease the tension, so he changed his tune and said, "Jellicoe can't be used, but those short-range missiles can still be used. My friends in the US military can suppress the surveillance and report it as a local infighting."
The driver tried to smooth things over, saying, "What are we waiting for? Let's go to the warehouse and get the missiles. We'll set off a fireworks show today."
Upon hearing this, everyone started laughing and joking again, discussing who should fire the first shot.
Eric was very pleased to see his harmonious subordinates. After fighting together for so many years, they had developed a strong bond. Moreover, this was his core group. After all, achieving success, or even seizing power, cannot be done by relying on one person alone; that would be very difficult.
Eric, who was pondering future plans, was interrupted by the voice of the team's electronics expert: "Boss, the Kersen tribe has contacted you. Do you want to listen?"
Eric frowned and muttered, "What do you mean? Are you planning to raise prices again?"
The Kersen tribe was the largest tribe near Gemila. Eric contacted a prominent figure in the tribe through his friends and, through a deal of mutual benefit—essentially selling weapons from Stark's warehouse—he secured a guarantee from the Kersen tribe that other nearby tribes would no longer harass Gemila.
After all, the weapons in the warehouse were also part of the mission budget, so it's normal to use them to complete the mission. Of course, we can't delve into how much Eric embezzled, but it's a big spender's money, so why not take it?
After thinking for a while, Eric decided to answer the phone. After all, it would be a waste of time and unrealistic to send someone to sweep through each tribe one by one. The commotion would be too great, and he would become the biggest terrorist.
"Give me the phone." Eric reached out and took the satellite phone from the electronics expert, pressed the switch, and began negotiating with the other party again.
