Chapter 79
Mutation
"Shoot! Shoot!" Rumlow shouted anxiously.
The Hydra soldiers reacted quickly, their blue energy beams forming a dense net of guns that covered all the monster's paths.
But this monster, its body covered in a pale blue aura and born from the corpse of T03, had evolved resistance to energy beams. It charged straight at the energy net, and the primal slaughter began.
T03, or rather T03 variant, has become a beast-like form. Its limbs are on the ground, and a long tail with bone spikes grows out of its tail. Its head is no longer human-shaped, with its eyes shrunk to slits and no nose. The only facial feature left is a huge mouth full of fangs, which can bite off a human head with a crunchy sound.
The Hydra soldiers were being decimated rapidly, and some even began to retreat into the elevator shaft, preparing to pull the ropes and escape. Clearly, these elite soldiers, lacking any real faith, were collapsing quickly when faced with a one-sided massacre, especially against a monster.
Rumlow also wanted to run, but he was a step too late. After all, he was the commander and had to direct the soldiers to fight back. He was slower than the soldiers standing at the back, but that's exactly why he wasn't targeted by the monster.
Sensing that its prey was about to escape, the monster charged head-on through the Hydra soldiers' lines, rushing into the elevator shaft. Its sharp claws pierced the wall, and after circling the shaft, its tail's sharp bone spikes severed all the ropes and the bodies of the soldiers holding them.
Only the dull thuds of corpses falling into the elevator shaft remained, and the slaughter continued.
As screams continued, fewer and fewer Hydra soldiers remained, eventually gathering together back to back, hoping to find some sense of security.
The monsters started playing games too, like cats playing with mice, carrying them away one by one, and then slowly eating the unfortunate ones they had carried away from unseen corners amidst screams of agony.
Rumlow was surrounded by Hydra soldiers, fear gripping his mind and his heart pounding faster and faster. But he began to feel his mind becoming clearer and his body getting hotter and hotter, as if his adrenaline was surging. His body was pushing beyond its limits under extreme fear.
"Turn the energy gun to maximum, turn off the safety, preheat it, and then put it in the backpack," Rumlow ordered, throwing a backpack on the ground.
The Hydra soldiers had no other ideas and obeyed Rumlow's orders. All the energy guns were put into firing mode, and the energy bars on the guns flashed wildly.
Rumlow picked up his backpack and waved for a soldier to come over.
"Carry him on your back."
The soldier instinctively slung his backpack over his shoulder, unaware of what Rumlow was up to.
Rumlow patted the soldier on the shoulder, then suddenly drew his pistol and shot the soldier in the knee.
Rumlow's pistol was also specially made; the high-powered bullet shattered the kneecap, and the soldier immediately fell to the ground, groaning in pain.
Rumlow lifted the soldier with one hand and threw him forcefully out of the circle formed by the Hydra soldiers. Then, he put on the energy detector, picked up the energy gun, and waited.
The monster, having quickly finished feeding, reappeared and charged at a speed too fast for the naked eye to detect, leaving only a blur, before snatching away the wailing soldier.
Then the monster, hidden in an unseen corner, began to slowly devour the soldier, but this time, Rumlow clearly saw the energy signal emanating from the energy gun, which was in a state of readiness, through his energy detector.
"Goodbye, monster." Rumlow immediately aimed and fired. The massive energy beam instantly pierced through layers of obstacles and accurately hit the energy guns in his backpack.
The energy beam instantly melted the energy gun, destroyed the energy storage device, and the blue energy was released unchecked, creating an explosion even stronger than the energy bomb from before.
An energy bomb simply concentrates energy into a beam and cuts it in a dense pattern, leaving some debris behind.
The detonated energy block, like a black hole, indiscriminately turned everything around it blue, completely dissolving it.
Even the monster, which had gained energy resistance, lasted less than a second longer before being decomposed along with the surrounding objects. After the blue light dissipated, only a standard spherical cavity remained in its place.
"Finally over." Rumlow looked at the mess in the laboratory and finally breathed a sigh of relief. The monster was gone, and now it was time to hurry up and copy the data.
But the reality was clearly cruel. The people in white coats who had been watching from the safety passage began to enter, taking off their coats to reveal various weapons underneath.
"Don't move! Drop your weapons!"
At the shouts, the Hydra soldiers picked up their weapons and began to fight back. How could they possibly surrender? They couldn't beat the monsters, but they can't beat the humans? Are you guys bulletproof too?
The sound of bullets being fired rang out again in the laboratory.
Unfortunately, the Hydra soldiers' energy weapons were all destroyed in the explosion, leaving only ordinary weapons, whose performance was clearly inferior to the expensive, non-mass-producible experimental weapons provided by Stark.
Furthermore, the white-coated soldiers had been enhanced, and the Hydra soldiers, whose numbers were already less than one-fifth, were rapidly reduced to single digits in almost a single encounter.
Hydra's invasion plan has now completely failed, but an unexpected incident still occurred at the end.
Rumlow watched as the enemies gradually surrounded him. Bullets were flying everywhere, and his cover had been riddled with holes, offering no protection. So he took the energy block off his energy gun and inserted the dark blue energy block into a slot on his chest.
A blue light membrane appeared, enveloping Rumlow's entire body. At that moment, a bullet struck Rumlow, but something unexpected happened.
The bullet struck the pale blue light membrane like a fist hitting water, creating ripples that spread across the screen before the bullet lost its momentum and fell to the ground.
Rumlow flicked his wrists, sending two daggers flying. He swung them at the approaching white-coated man, and close-quarters combat began.
The doctor in the white coat wasn't just sitting idly by; his enhanced reaction speed far surpassed that of ordinary people. He directly used his gun to parry the dagger attack, and the two engaged in a fierce fight.
But the other Hydra soldiers weren't so lucky. They were quickly wiped out by the white coats, leaving only Rumlow. A group of white coats took the opportunity to fire a few more shots, but they were all blocked by the blue light membrane. They had no choice but to put away their weapons and join the close combat.
But this strange light membrane could not only intercept bullets, but also fists. Rumlow became like a turtle in a tortoise shell, and no one could hurt him at all.
Moreover, everyone noticed that Rumlow seemed to become more energetic, stronger, and faster as the fight went on, as if he had been enhanced as well.
Meanwhile, at the safety exit, the leader in the white coat was talking to Wesker.
"Sir, the intruders are now mostly under control, but what about the leader? He followed the wrong person and came here with us."
The person in the white coat didn't notice at first that someone was following them, since they were all wearing white work clothes and their attention was entirely focused on packing the boxes for T03.
Finally, it was only when the leader, seeing the scene of battle, made a sound in fright that he was noticed. Then, the person in the white coat checked the leader's personal information through the communicator and confirmed that he was one of their own, with quite high privileges.
The leader listened to the report from the man in the white coat and smiled sheepishly. He had been too nervous during the escape and had followed the security personnel here in a daze. It was while communicating with the man in the white coat that he suddenly discovered he had the code name "leader".
The big boss didn't think it was bad; on the contrary, he thought the code name suited his role as chief scientific advisor.
At this moment, the leader was watching the battle in the test field with curiosity, and found that it had begun to evolve in the direction of superhero fighting.
Out of professional habit, the boss couldn't help but start calculating their physical strength and recalling the data he had seen in the laboratory.
His mind began to calculate frantically, and he felt clearer than ever before, as if he saw the door to truth opening for him. Ideas popped out one after another, as if he had been shot in the face with inspiration.
Just then, the man in the white coat reporting exclaimed in surprise to Wesker, "Boss, something's wrong! Why has this big boss's head suddenly gotten so big?!"
