Chapter 30
Legendary Story
"Mr. Stark, I've been waiting for you." Coulson stood outside the car window, maintaining a professional smile, showing no annoyance at being stood up multiple times.
Tony couldn't refuse any longer this time, and said quite readily, "You want to ask, right? Let's talk in my office."
Coulson was taken aback by Tony's straightforward answer, but quickly recovered.
"Okay, thank you for your support. It won't take up too much of your time."
Tony then led Coulson to his office, where Pepper happened to be there as well.
As mentioned earlier, as Tony's assistant, Pepper's office was located next to Tony's, and since Tony rarely came to the office, it was more like Pepper's private office.
Coulson also knew Pepper and had tried to book Tony through her. Obviously, Pepper couldn't make the decision for Tony. The appointment schedule was written several times, but Tony never followed it.
"Hello, Miss Potts. I'm here to ask Mr. Stark about what happened during the kidnapping."
Pepper nodded to show she understood, then smiled at Tony without saying anything, afraid that if she opened her mouth, Tony would say something inappropriate. As their relationship grew closer, one very bad thing was that Tony would tease her from time to time.
Fortunately, Tony didn't have any quirks that he displayed in public. Seeing that Pepper was working, he walked over to the side, invited Coulson to sit down, and began to talk.
"Which department are you from again? What do you want to know?"
"We are from S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Oh, there's an abbreviation now? I remember the original name was really long and tedious."
"It was just decided. We're changing the documents, and it will be fully changed soon."
"Okay, what do you want to know?"
Coulson didn't answer directly, but changed the subject: "Mr. Stark, did you know that Mr. Howard Stark was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
"What? My dad was a secret agent?" Tony said, feigning surprise, though he genuinely didn't know.
Coulson explained, "To be precise, Mr. Howard played a crucial role in the establishment of the Scientific Strategy Corps, the predecessor of S.H.I.E.L.D., and later, after the Scientific Strategy Corps was reorganized into S.H.I.E.L.D., he continued to participate in the research of various projects within S.H.I.E.L.D. He was not an agent, but a founder and researcher."
Tony casually asked, "So what did he figure out? What kind of high technology do you guys have?"
"I'm sorry, these are confidential," Coulson said, then changed the subject.
"Because of Mr. Howard's contributions, we are responsible for your safety, so we are inquiring about your experiences in the Middle East."
"No need for that. I don't get along with him very well. While he was still around, we only saw each other a few times a year. Oh, that's right. I was wondering where he always went. He went to work at your S.H.I.E.L.D.!"
In Tony's memory, Howard was elusive and the two spent very little time together, which strained their father-son relationship and made their last meeting very unpleasant, ultimately causing Tony a lifelong regret.
Coulson quickly began to explain, saying that he had originally intended to get closer to them, but things had turned increasingly hostile.
"Mr. Howard has been concerned about you, and he has a lot of things at S.H.I.E.L.D. that he wants us to pass on to you."
Tony said bluntly, "It's too much trouble. Just mail it to the front desk of Stark Industries. I'll call Happy when I have time."
Seeing Tony's unyielding attitude, Coulson didn't dare say anything more and quickly got to work.
"What happened to you after the attack in the Middle East?"
Tony had already prepared for this problem. The T-virus couldn't be leaked, so he had no choice but to fight his way out himself.
So Tony started telling stories, and after a while, Tony's mouth was dry from talking, while Coulson listened in stunned silence.
Finally, Colson concluded:
"After you were kidnapped by the Ten Rings Gang, you were subjected to various forms of torture, but this did not defeat your will. Instead, it strengthened your resolve. You pretended to cooperate with them in filming videos to gain a chance to catch your breath."
"Yes!" Tony nodded affirmatively, then looked at the notebook Coulson was using to take notes and reminded him, "When you record this, you should write down my inner thoughts in detail, mainly reflecting my patriotism, my refusal to bow to terrorists, my resistance to oppression, and my opposition to tyranny."
Coulson ignored Tony's request for more details and continued, "Then, when they were about to execute you, you persuaded them not to by promising to build the Jericho missile. Is that reasonable? Are terrorists that stupid?"
"That makes perfect sense. I'm a genius; I can convince them."
Although Tony also felt it was unreasonable, this part was true, and it was the other party who took the initiative to ask for it.
"Hmm, and then you took advantage of the opportunity to manufacture weapons, obtained a large amount of ammunition, made bombs, detonated them in caves, seized weapons, and that's how you fought your way out?"
"Yes! Remember to include my friend Ethan in this section, portraying him as an international fighter with noble principles, unafraid of power, and enduring hardship to achieve his goal."
After saying half of what he had said, Tony noticed that Coulson's pen wasn't moving, so he simply took the notebook from Coulson's hand and started writing himself, saying as he wrote.
"The last part is too short and doesn't highlight my bravery. There should be a fight scene. Although I used a gun the whole time, it's not good without hand-to-hand combat. Also, why wasn't the scene where I lit the armory while smoking and turned around without looking back at the explosion written out?"
Coulson finally couldn't hold back any longer. He snatched back his notebook and said seriously, "Mr. Stark, you're talking about a Hollywood script, Rambo and First Blood, a Hollywood movie."
Tony also pretended to be serious and said, "My experience may be too legendary to be convincing, but that's the truth."
Seeing that Tony was starting to back out, Coulson had no choice but to hand in the report and let the chief do whatever he wanted with it.
However, S.H.I.E.L.D. provided some updated information, and Coulson needed to ask Tony again to confirm the situation: "What do you know about the recent wipeout of the Ten Rings in the Middle East?"
Tony continued enthusiastically, "I know, I know, it's a story about a domineering CEO who returns as the Dragon King to avenge his friend."
Tony then launched into another impassioned speech.
Coulson was much calmer this time, as the previous story was too Hollywood-esque and therefore less credible.
"Well, you hired a CIA black team to maintain peace and fight terrorists in Ethan's hometown. After defeating several waves of smaller enemies, you learned about a high-level meeting of the Ten Rings Gang and planned to ambush the meeting in one fell swoop. You succeeded, but then a superhuman appeared, and only one member of the black team survived."
It feels more like a script, and it's even a series of two movies, plus an Easter egg. Are they planning a third movie? A superpower battle?
"That's right." Apart from some polishing, the content is basically true, except that Tony added some scenes for himself, saying that he had been remotely controlling things all along.
Tony informed S.H.I.E.L.D. about Shang-Chi's father's situation because he wanted to use S.H.I.E.L.D. to cause trouble for the other party.
After all, he hired them, but only one of them came back alive, causing him to spend so much on compensation. Of course, this was only because Tony, who came from another time, was kind enough to give it to him. Otherwise, if they had brought their own food and paid to come to work, there would have been no compensation at all. It would have been good enough if they hadn't dismantled the Gundam and sold it.
However, looking at Coulson's expression, Tony felt that he had embellished things too much and didn't quite believe himself.
Alas, what has become of trust between people?
