Chapter 81
Surrender
Watching the leader run to the gorilla's lab again, lock eyes with him, and mutter something under his breath, Tony realized he couldn't understand the genius's mind.
After giving a few more instructions, Tony left the T1 experimental building and headed to the T0 experimental field, where another prisoner was waiting for him to interrogate.
Rumlow is in a very bad situation. He is bound to the bed with restraints, one arm is receiving a T-virus inhibitor to stop the T-virus in his body from dividing and evolving, the other arm is receiving anesthesia to relax his muscles so he can't resist, and there is an IV tube inserted into his lower body. After all, such a large amount of fluid must be administered in accordance with science and the conservation of fluids.
Armed security personnel were standing nearby, guns practically pressed against his head; any move Rumlow made would result in him being shot.
"Agent Rumlow, I didn't expect to meet you again under these circumstances." Tony looked at Rumlow's bruised and swollen face, and after taking out his tablet to check the surveillance footage several times, he was sure that it was indeed Rumlow.
"Ugh, ugh, ugh." The muscle anesthesia allowed Rumlow to breathe with difficulty, but speaking was unlikely.
"Reduce his dosage," Tony instructed.
The experimenters immediately stepped forward to operate. As the injection of the anesthetic slowed down, Rumlow's breathing became noticeably stronger, and his chest heaved more. After waiting a while, Rumlow took a deep breath and began to breathe heavily, as if his mouth had been covered the whole time.
The sudden change caused the armed security personnel to put their hands on the trigger.
"Don't get excited, don't get excited, I just need to catch my breath," Rumlow immediately explained.
"Don't be nervous, I think Agent Rumlow has a lot to say to me."
"Yes!" Rumlow tried to move his body. The effects of the anesthetic were fading, and the T-virus enhancement effect was starting to take effect. Although the inhibitor was still working, it only prevented the virus from continuing to evolve; the existing effects were still present.
"Speak, give me a reason why I'll spare your life after you led your men into my company and destroyed my lab."
Rumlow's brain raced as he tried to find a reason for himself, but unfortunately, the T-virus hadn't enhanced his brain, which lacked any intellectual talent, so Rumlow couldn't come up with a decent one.
"I was sent by S.H.I.E.L.D. They should be coming to ransom me. Why don't you contact them?"
"Have the test subjects eaten today? They behaved well, let's give them an extra meal," Tony asked Wesker, turning to him.
Wesker readily complied by taking out his tablet and bringing up a scene from the laboratory, showing two T03s eating inside the experimental chamber in a very bloody scene.
After all, you can't expect a bunch of single researchers to cook meals for the experimental subjects and then send them in. They're too lazy to eat themselves; they'd rather have a plug attached to their butts to charge themselves.
Therefore, the food processing was very primitive; basically, the whole animal was thrown in.
Looking at the footage Wesker showed him, Rumlow immediately changed his tune, saying:
"I'm still useful. I know a lot of S.H.I.E.L.D. secrets. That energy gun is a product of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s New Mexico Sandbox Research Base, where there is a range of related products."
"You want me to go to war with S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Tony said speechlessly. Although he was annoyed by S.H.I.E.L.D.'s constant bothering, Tony wasn't crazy enough to confront them right now.
"No, I know how to get in. I can take you there. Besides energy weapons, there are many other amazing things."
"Let's feed the test subject instead, chop him up a bit, so he doesn't suffer too much." Tony was about to leave, all that was just empty talk.
"Wait, what do you want? Just leave me a way out, I'll do anything." Rumlow finally figured it out. After thinking about it for so long, he decided to let Tony say it himself.
Rumlow's words stunned Tony, who began to ponder what he should want.
Seeing that Tony had started to think, Rumlow knew there was a chance; at least he hadn't been killed immediately, so there was still a way to survive.
After thinking for a while, Tony asked first:
"Whether you survive or not depends on how honest you are." As he spoke, Tony activated his telekinesis, using the genetic imprint to make Rumlow even more thirsty for life.
Rumlow's eyes drifted over the video Wesker was still playing of T03 eating, then he quickly looked away, but the image of himself being torn in half and then being chewed up by T03 kept flashing through his mind.
Never mind, survival is the most important thing. With this thought, Rumlow's loyalty to Hydra plummeted, and he decided to betray Hydra.
"I'm an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., but I'm also a Hydra agent. Hydra is..." Before Rumlow could finish his self-destruction...
Tony waved his hand and said, "I'm not interested in hearing that."
Seeing Tony's nonchalant expression, Rumlow immediately became anxious and quickly said, "Hydra is a powerful organization that has existed since World War II. It has been developing in secret, relying on S.H.I.E.L.D. and other American agencies. It is already very powerful and is just one opportunity away from appearing in the open."
"I know," Tony said calmly.
Now it was Rumlow's turn to be surprised.
"You know? That's impossible. Our operations are extremely secretive. When we do make a move, it's always under the guise of another organization. Like this time, it appears to be an operation by S.H.I.E.L.D., but in reality, it's all done by Hydra. In the end, Hydra gets all the spoils."
"I not only know about Hydra, but I also know that Obadiah was tricked into coming to kill me by you, and that you helped set up Obadiah's lab. We've already dealt with each other, haven't we?"
Upon hearing Tony's words, Rumlow was startled. Oh no, old grudges and new hatreds had combined. However, his mental fortitude was still strong, and he continued to plead for survival.
"Since you know about Hydra, you must also know our strength. We have people in S.H.I.E.L.D., the CIA, the government, and so on. Join us, and we will be the true masters of America." Rumlow was practically using the same tricks Pierce had used to fool him to convince Tony.
However, it's clear that Rumlow doesn't have Pierce's eloquence, and Tony isn't a penniless idiot.
"It seems I don't need to join you to be a master of America. Just so you know, I'm a billionaire, an arms dealer." Tony looked at Rumlow with an expression that said, as if he were looking at an idiot.
"Hydra is alright." Rumlow's mind raced, trying to figure out some benefits from Hydra. Five social insurances and one housing fund, that seems to be from S.H.I.E.L.D. The other benefits weren't really that useful to Tony.
"Forget Hydra, you don't own it. Tell me what you can do?" Tony helped Rumlow get started.
"I, I am loyal to you. I graduated first in my class from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy and served as captain of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Rapid Response Special Forces for many years, with a 100% mission success rate."
"It's ninety-nine now," Tony reminded him.
"I can work for you, and I can feel that I've been strengthened, stronger than before. I will never let you down. One Eric alone is not enough for Umbrella. Like this time, I can be your shadow henchman, and I can do any dirty work." Rumlow felt he had found a way to survive.
"This is somewhat valuable, but unfortunately there's no position for you here. However, you can go back to S.H.I.E.L.D. and continue working for me." Tony finally realized how to use Rumlow.
