Chapter 86
Ross: I've become a supporting character?
After a flight of several hours, Tony went directly to the city where Culver University is located.
After getting off the plane, Tony finally had time to connect with Eric to get more information.
"How did you discover Banner's whereabouts?"
"It was General Ross's men who obtained intelligence from the Border Agency that a Mexican smuggling organization was wiped out, or rather, massacred."
"What do you mean by smuggling organization? Banner went smuggled? That makes sense, he can't just come back openly with an American passport. But shouldn't he be careful and try not to reveal his whereabouts? How did he end up fighting with Mexico?" According to Ross's intelligence, Banner has been controlling his emotions very well in recent years. Except for life-or-death crises, Hulk has never lost control.
Eric hesitated for a moment. Although Hulk had given him a hard time last time, as a warrior, Eric still considered Hulk a respectable opponent. He was unsure whether he should reveal the truth, but Tony was his boss and had the right to know. Besides, even if he didn't say anything, Ross's intelligence would still state the situation.
"According to the surviving stowaways, Banner was taken by Mexicans to eat cream puffs because he was good-looking and had no money. Of course, Banner didn't get any, otherwise Hulk wouldn't have come out."
Tony pondered for a moment what the cream puff meant, and then, realizing what it meant, quickly said, "I understand, no need to explain. And then, did you lose them again?"
"Yes, it is clear that Dr. Banner is very intelligent. Shortly after crossing the border, Dr. Banner disappeared from the surveillance footage. However, we can tell from the existing clues that Dr. Banner went to the city where Culver University is located."
"Great, are all our people in place? And is everything ready? This time, it's practically our home turf."
"They're all in place, just missing Dr. Banner. But General Ross is here too, and he's going to meet with Betty Ross. I think General Ross still wants to do it herself."
"Don't worry about that, I already have a plan. I'll make General Ross behave."
When the call ended, Tony had already arrived at Betty Ross's apartment. However, Jarvis's investigation revealed that the apartment belonged to a psychiatrist named Leonard, who apparently is now Betty's boyfriend. No wonder the Hulk turns green.
Tony knocked on the door, and soon a man's voice came from inside.
"Wait a mininute."
Then someone came out, opened the door, looked at Tony, and asked, "Hello, who are you looking for?"
"Hello, I'm Tony Stark. You've probably seen me in magazines."
"Tony Stark, oh, you're that billionaire. Hello, what can I do for you?"
Seeing that this was a normal reaction, Tony satisfied his vanity and then said, "I'll go find Miss Betty Ross."
"Looking for Betty? She's a bit busy right now, and I don't think it's a good time to talk to her." Leonard felt the atmosphere inside the house wasn't suitable for another person to enter.
"Is it because of her father? I happen to know Ross too, and I think the timing is perfect." With that, Tony squeezed through the door and went inside.
Upon entering the room, I saw Ross and Betty sitting at opposite ends of the table, sitting there silently, neither of them saying a word. It was clear that General Ross was not very good at handling the father-daughter relationship.
"Hey, looks like I'm not too late." Tony sat down between the two of them.
Seeing Tony enter without greeting him, Ross said with displeasure, "This is between my daughter and me, it's none of your business."
Tony, contrary to his usual behavior, acted very tough in front of Ross, directly retorting, "This is not a matter between you and your daughter. Since I've gotten involved in the bio-enhancement project, it has to be done according to my rules."
Tony's words stunned Ross. "Wait, did you take the super soldier serum? Did it mess up your brain? Why are you being so impulsive?"
Betty felt a strange sense of joy seeing Ross get roasted; she was genuinely frustrated by her father's strict control and felt happy to see him get the short end of the stick. However, she also asked curiously:
"What biological enhancement program?"
Tony explained to Betty, "Do you remember the experiment you and Banner did together? That gamma-ray experiment?"
"That experiment, of course I remember. The experiment failed, and Banner left me." Betty realized she had misspoke, as her boyfriend Leonard was still standing there.
Ross glared angrily at Tony, clearly not wanting his daughter to know too much. He was about to tell Tony to shut up, but Tony's next words left Ross speechless.
"Yes, that's the experiment. Obviously, none of you noticed that the experiment didn't fail; on the contrary, it was very successful. Of course, that's the difference between you ordinary people and geniuses like me."
Betty looked at Tony with a questioning expression, then at Ross, her eyes conveying, "Dad, where did you find this lunatic? Aren't you going to pull out a gun and shoot him?"
Tony continued, "Although the radiation resistance experiment failed, it successfully enhanced Banner's body, creating a super soldier, or rather, a super monster. This is the purpose of my cooperation with the military: the bio-enhancement program!"
Ross frowned as he looked at Tony, somewhat puzzled. How did he become a supporting character? Wasn't he the one in charge of this plan?
"But unfortunately, General Ross let Hulk, also known as Banner, escape because of his soft heart. Otherwise, Stark Industries would not only be selling weapons now, but bio-enhancing would also be a pillar industry with unlimited potential."
Betty was shocked by Tony's words, but more importantly, the way she looked at Ross was different. It turned out that she had misunderstood her father all these years. His surveillance of her and the cleaning up of the Culver University laboratory must have been to protect her and prevent others from targeting her.
Ross was shocked again. In this day and age, there are still people eager to take the blame. However, Ross noticed his daughter's gaze and decided to remain silent. So far, it seems to be going well.
Tony got more and more excited as he talked, walked up behind Ross, slapped Ross on the shoulder, and said to Betty, "Now's the chance to change all these mistakes, but General Ross doesn't agree with my plan and wants you to get away from here. He came to find you behind my back."
Betty watched as Tony patted Ross on the shoulder, and immediately felt a surge of anger as she imagined her father enduring humiliation and living under someone else's roof, all so that these things wouldn't affect her.
"What exactly do you want? By the way, who are you?!"
Leonard, who had been sitting at the corner of the table, finally had a chance to speak and introduced Betty: "Tony Stark, the arms oligarch, the one who was kidnapped and made the news the other day."
"Arms dealers." Betty muttered to herself, then connected everything in her mind: the experiment from years ago had been discovered by arms dealers who found out its military applications; her father had let Banner go for her sake, while also monitoring her to prevent the arms dealers from harassing her.
"What exactly do you want! Stop threatening my father!"
Ross finally couldn't sit still any longer. He stood up, grabbed Tony, and pulled him outside, gritting his teeth as he said to Tony, "Let's go outside and talk."
