Chapter 74
Waiting
"That was a new attempt. We could only simply replicate the Super Soldier Serum, lacking the crucial Vita Ray to activate the Super Soldier Serum's maximum effect, so I started experimenting with other energy rays."
"Gamma rays?" Tony asked directly.
Ross looked at Tony and asked seriously, "How did you know?"
"Please, General, I'm not stupid. I'm a genius too. Putting aside the off-the-charts radiation levels of the various detection devices carried by the Umbrella Corps, just from the chat logs I've seen between Samuel and Banner, they were discussing how to reduce the gamma radiation levels in the blood."
After hearing Tony's explanation, Ross understood and stopped denying it.
"Yes, it's gamma rays. It just so happens that my daughter's research project is on gamma rays. Anyway, it doesn't matter which project I give the funding to, so I invested some money in my daughter."
Okay, there's also nepotism involved. Look how difficult it is to do scientific research. You either need a sugar daddy, or your daddy has to be really good at bringing in money.
"What I didn't expect was that Banner actually succeeded. However, he thought at the time that he was researching radiation protection experiments, studying how gamma rays could guide beneficial mutations in the human body. He also thought that the super soldier serum we injected was an anti-radiation agent."
At this point, Ross seemed to remember something and couldn't help but laugh, but he quickly suppressed his laughter, and a trace of sadness appeared on his face.
It seems that he and his daughter had a good relationship when the experiment started. Even if Betty had to pretend, she had to pretend to be loving towards him as a "dual father". However, when Banner transformed and the purpose of the experiment was exposed, the father-daughter relationship obviously broke down.
"And then Banner ran away? Why? It's unnecessary. Are you planning to lock him up?" Tony didn't really understand why Banner ran away. Why give up being a general's son-in-law and having better experimental conditions to become a wanted criminal?
"Hmph, what a nerd's idea. Saying that the Hulk can't be used as a military weapon. Hulk, he even gave that monster a name," Ross said dismissively.
"I don't quite understand his thinking. Maybe he's become stupid from reading too much. You know, these kinds of people are just pretentious."
In the original story, Tony Stark and Ross thought the same way, otherwise he wouldn't have started an arms company and manufactured all kinds of advanced weapons. Tony's peace philosophy before he was kidnapped was to build the strongest weapons and then make others submit to his peace philosophy.
Tony's current goal is to become the strongest weapon and stop eating beef, but he hasn't found a way to do so yet. He still needs to start a company and make sure his subordinates are strong enough to support him.
Listening to Tony's words, Ross inexplicably felt that he was quite on the same page with Tony. If Tony had been the one to research it for him, would he have already developed a finished product and had the Hulk army?
Damn Banner, why didn't Betty choose Tony in the first place?
"Yes, Banner is Xxxx." Ross stopped pretending and started cursing Banner directly, but this was probably due not only to the experimental reasons, but also to the anger he felt towards his daughter for causing their strained relationship.
After Tony chimed in with a couple of comments, he steered the conversation back on track.
"The fishing situation here is likely to continue for a long time, and Banner will have to keep an eye on it."
"Let Catherine handle this. We have a whole range of methods for hunting down the Hulk," Ross said confidently.
"Okay, I'll have Jarvis check Banner's computer too, see if we can find any more information."
---------------
Currently, it seems that in the face of the power of nature, humanity is still so weak and helpless. At the very least, Ross has completely lost track of Hulk's whereabouts in the rainforest.
In the end, they could only trace it back to the place where Hulk fought Tony, but they could only guess that Hulk went crazy again in the rainforest, destroyed some trees, and then somehow turned into Banner. After that, they couldn't find any trace of him, since Banner could go anywhere along the rainforest.
Furthermore, Banner doesn't need to worry about supplies. When he's about to die, Hulk appears, forcibly replenishes his life, and then Banner suffers again. Now it's impossible to track down which city or even which country Hulk went to.
We can only wait for Banner to accidentally expose his whereabouts again, or for another gamma ray overdose to occur somewhere else.
In contrast to Ross's passive waiting, Jarvis discovered new clues on Banner's computer, or more precisely, on the website where he communicated with Dr. Blue.
"These are the chat logs that I had someone recover from the website server's hard drive."
Although theoretically their chat history was encrypted and not saved, Jarvis simply opened the website, took the physical hard drive, and forcibly recovered some of the chat history from the deleted data on the hard drive.
All I can say is that with enough computing power, Jarvis is a god on the Internet.
Compared to the chat logs previously cached on Banner's computer, we now have much more information.
Dr. Blue suggested that Banner provide the data from the original experiment to further understand why Banner discovered the mutation, so as to create a more targeted drug to reduce the gamma energy level in Banner's body until the Hulk is completely eliminated.
"He even wants to destroy the Hulk!" Ross turned red with shock after hearing the information Tony provided. He had painstakingly tracked down the Hulk, and this guy actually wanted to make the Hulk disappear!
"Yes, it seems that he didn't approach Samuel to create a drug to control gamma ray levels and thus control the Hulk, but rather to completely eliminate the Hulk."
Tony looked at the data Jarvis had painstakingly obtained and suddenly realized that he could have just asked Samuel about these things. What a waste of electricity!
"Has Banner not contacted Dr. Blue yet?" Ross pressed.
Jarvis's voice came from the computer next to him.
"No, I've already taken control of the website they're using, and Mr. Banner Green's account isn't logged in yet. I suspect they might want to get the experimental data before contacting me."
Ross looked at the computer that Jarvis had taken over, remained silent for a moment, and then said to Tony:
"You can't just hack into the military's computers like that, and so blatantly at that."
Tony said nonchalantly, "I thought we were in a deep partnership now, so we should trust each other and share information. For example, Jarvis just saw a shipment that was going to be delivered to the base, and it's at the highest level of security. But I saw the Stark Industries logo on the picture of the shipment, and it's the old one."
Ross's expression turned serious, and he said very earnestly, "That's none of your business, Tony."
"It's not my fault. I'm just reminding you that the T-virus enhancement drug is also going to be discontinued. If you're not in a hurry, you can use some of the new ones first. Those old relics should be put in a museum and used as mascots, like Captain America's shield."
"I'll consider it. Now, let's get back to the point. I'm giving you access to this base so you can find a way to arrest Banner. What ideas do you have?"
"Fishing at Greenburn College is too passive. Since we know Banner still needs experimental data, let's go to his original lab and the original researchers—let's go to Culver University!"
"There's no more data there. I moved the lab. The one you see underground is it," Ross emphasized.
"But Banner doesn't know that, and his girlfriend, your daughter, is still at Culver University."
"Tony, although I have high hopes for you, stay away from my daughter!"
