Chapter 69
Tracking
"Boss, you're back." The members of the Umbrella Corps gathered near the command vehicle. Tony had run away, Eric was nowhere to be seen, and the group of people didn't know who to listen to. After treating Ross's soldiers, they had nothing to do.
"How are things? Are our people alright?" Eric glanced around and looked at everyone.
"Besides old Kerry, his arm was smashed into a pulp by the collapsing giant metal tank. We only managed to pull him out; his arm is probably unusable now."
"Uh, is he alright?" Eric quickly turned around. He had just seen Kerry, but hadn't noticed that his arm was gone.
"It's okay, I'm on the phone with HR right now, asking about how to get medical insurance reimbursement for work-related injuries."
Eric was also very interested in health insurance, since he hadn't had it before and had to pay for it himself. Thinking about it, working with Tony wasn't so bad, at least he had full insurance coverage.
"What did HR say? I remember when we signed the contract, they specifically emphasized that the insurance was very comprehensive."
"Ugh, don't even mention it. The talks with HR were going really well, but then they asked a medical doctor in the biological research department about the injury, and they said that limb regeneration technology has already entered the clinical stage, the arm can grow back, and losing an arm isn't considered a disability anymore, so HR doesn't have to pay compensation."
After a moment of silence, Eric finally understood: you really can't trust capitalists, and you can't trust your colleagues either, or they'll betray you.
"It's better than being disabled, as long as your arm grows back," Eric could only console himself.
"By the way, will the company reimburse the cost of the long arms?"
Upon hearing Eric's question, his teammate said helplessly, "We will reimburse you, but only the basic expenses."
"What is a basic fee?" Eric sensed something was wrong.
"They just care about growing a new arm, regardless of whether it's the same size as the other arm, whether the movement is coordinated, or the subsequent recovery. Kerry is currently negotiating with that PhD in the lab; all these services will cost extra."
Eric was shocked, and after a long while, he said, "Let me organize a donation, so we can help each other out."
"It shouldn't be necessary. I overheard Kerry's phone call; it seemed like he said the cost could be reduced if we cooperated with the experiment."
Before Eric could say anything more, a teammate walked over with a backpack and reported to Eric:
"Boss, we found a backpack while cleaning up the battlefield. It must have been left behind by that monster."
Eric took the backpack and found a torn-up newspaper and a high-end computer inside.
"What does this newspaper mean? Who is Betty Rose targeting?" Eric asked, looking at the newspaper with a puzzled expression.
One team member speculated irresponsibly, "Maybe it's just something the target uses to comfort himself. When I was serving in the military, I used swimsuit magazine covers. Maybe the target likes wearing white lab coats."
"Get lost." Eric empathized with Ross, knowing how Ross felt when he heard about carrying out a mission and Tony going to book a shooting. What kind of time is this to be talking about such vulgar things?
Eric glanced at the newspaper, then at the computer. He didn't understand computers. The action team was different from the previous special forces teams; there were no electronics experts in the team. Remembering that he was nominally hired by Ross and was being paid a salary, Eric picked up his backpack and walked towards the command vehicle.
Upon entering the command vehicle, Eric noticed that Ross and Bronsky were staring at each other, the atmosphere very strange. He instinctively felt that he had come at the wrong time, but looking around, there were quite a few people in the command vehicle, so it shouldn't be what he had just thought.
It's all the fault of those musclemen in the team. We'll send all the calcium-deficient ones to the T0 testing ground. Right now, the T0 testing ground is the riskiest place for Umbrella Corporation's security department. Even the test subjects there have undergone a first-phase enhancement. There's no other way; without enhancement, the attrition rate would be too high. After all, if the test subjects get out of control, ordinary people will just die.
"General Ross! My men found this." Eric waved the backpack in his hand.
Upon hearing Eric's voice, Ross whispered to Bronsky, "When we get back to America, I'll arrange for you to undergo enhancement."
Bronsky became even more excited, his gaze turning to Eric with a burning intensity that made Eric start to have unpleasant thoughts again.
(Seriously? There are so many people here. Do all people who've been to England act like this? That monster should have just smashed him to death.)
Ross gave Catherine a look, and Catherine immediately stepped forward, took the backpack from Eric, and placed the contents of the backpack on the table.
Ross picked up the newspaper and looked at the picture of his daughter.
Eric, being somewhat sensible, didn't repeat his teammate's speculation. Instead, he said, "The person in the newspaper seems to be a biologist. Could he be related to this monster?"
Bronsky was preoccupied with reinforcements and didn't say anything more.
Ross shook his head and said, "This has nothing to do with her. Let's see what's on the computer."
Catherine turned on the computer and waved to the electronics expert who was operating the computer. The expert quickly turned on the computer, cracked Banner's account, and began searching for Banner's usage history.
"The computer contains research data on gamma rays, all of which are recent. There's also a Dr. Lan who's been in contact with the target, discussing bio-enhancement."
"Find Dr. Blue!" Ross said immediately. This was blatant theft; the Hulk enhancement technology was mine.
The electronics expert scratched his head and argued, "The communication method they used is one-time use and untraceable, and the chat logs didn't reveal much personal information, making it technically difficult to track. However, we can try to trace it based on where they mailed the items."
Ross sighed deeply; it seemed there was no better way now.
At that moment, Eric's communication device started ringing, and Jarvis's voice said:
"General, perhaps I can track down Dr. Lan."
Upon hearing the sound, Ross immediately frowned and looked at Eric.
Eric reluctantly took the small communicator off his shoulder. This device, though called a communicator, was actually a small computer. It could not only make calls but also connect to Jarvis. The mission to track Hulk was conveyed through it.
"This is Umbrella's action recorder, which is connected to Mr. Stark's artificial intelligence."
"Artificial intelligence, robots? The kind that can solve math problems?" Ross scoffed. As a proponent of bio-enhancing technology, he was naturally not very interested in artificial intelligence and robots, regarding them as gimmicks and tricks.
"What you said is inaccurate. I can analyze and handle all kinds of matters," Jarvis retorted.
Ross had no interest in talking to the robot and asked directly, "You say you can track it, how do you do that?"
Jarvis remained polite: "Your electronics expert said it was impossible to track because, given the current conditions, there wasn't enough computing power to crack the website and then identify the other party from their multiple IP redirects."
Ross looked at the electronics expert, who nodded in agreement with Jarvis's statement.
"But I can. My current computing power is sufficient to carry out this project, and I can also use it to access most public surveillance footage to identify the target."
"Then investigate!" Ross said immediately.
"I need Mr. Stark's authorization," Jarvis emphasized. Tony had previously given orders to connect to the internet, but those orders only permitted access to the database or to perform Tony's tasks; they did not specify that spontaneous tasks could be connected to the internet.
Jarvis's initiative to undertake this mission was actually a result of its autonomous evolution. It began to perform calculations on its own, and the calculations showed that hunting down the Hulk was in Tony's interest, which is why it took the initiative to carry out the mission.
"Then contact Tony!" Ross said, somewhat annoyed. Communicating with robots was such a hassle.
"Okay, please wait a moment. We will now contact Mr. Stark."
After a busy signal, the communicator successfully connected, but the first sound that came through was not Tony's voice, but the sound of flowing water lapping against the rocks, the deep sound of a woman relaxing after climbing a mountain. Only then did Tony's voice come through.
"Keep your voice down, I need to take this call."
