Chapter 1040
Safety Measures
Chapter 1040 Safety Measures
Fiona woke up just as dawn was breaking.
She glanced at her husband, who was still fast asleep, and without disturbing him, quietly put on her shoes and left the bedroom. She went to the window first to see if it had snowed last night, but then she caught sight of a familiar figure in the yard.
Wearing a thick, dark blue coat, Wade was standing near the fence by the entrance, sticking a javelin-like wooden stick into the ground.
The ground should have been frozen solid in winter, but Wade moved with remarkable ease, as if he were inserting a fork into a soft cake.
Beside him were seven or eight such "javelin" spears, carelessly placed on the ground.
Fiona blinked, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. She immediately wrapped herself in a thick coat and walked briskly into the yard.
Good morning, Wade!
Seeing that Wade had already planted the "javelin" against the iron fence, Fiona quickly bent down to pick up another one and said, "Let me help you! Where do you put this?"
Once Fiona had the "javelin" in her hand, she realized that it didn't seem to be made of wood, and it was heavier than it looked. Although it was thin, it felt like it weighed six or seven kilograms.
Good morning, Mom.
Wade took the "javelin," stuck it against another fence, and planted it in the ground, saying, "I don't need any help here. It's cold outside, you should go inside."
"Oh, I'll go inside if I feel cold."
As Fiona spoke, she forcefully lifted another "javelin" and walked toward the fence beside her.
She glanced at it and noticed that Wade had arranged everything symmetrically, so she quickly placed the rest in their corresponding positions. Rubbing her slightly numb hands, she ran to Wade's side and asked enthusiastically:
"Everything's set up, what else do we need to do?"
Seeing his mother's smiling face, which clearly showed her desire to help, Wade couldn't help but smile as well and said, "Then please bring me the potion barrel that's by the door."
Fiona turned and walked to the door, where she saw an oak barrel slightly larger than a water glass filled with half a barrel of golden liquid. The liquid inside was like molten gold, and instead of freezing due to the cold, it was still slowly rotating on its own.
She paused for a moment, bent down to pick up the wooden bucket, and carefully walked to Wade's side.
By this time, Vader had already inserted all the javelins. He took the potion, dipped a quill pen into it, and then began to draw patterns on the javelins and fence.
Fiona watched intently from the side, noticing that some of the symbols were linked together, while others formed loops. Each time a symbol was completed, it emitted a faint golden light, and after a few seconds, the entire pattern disappeared.
She held her breath, her heart filled with wonder and admiration, but dared not utter a sound to disturb Wade at this moment.
After the last "javelin" pattern was completed, Dobby's shrill voice came from the kitchen window:
"Mrs. Grey, Mr. Wade, breakfast is ready! Today we have fried eggs, bacon, roasted mushrooms, and hot milk!"
"I'm coming!"
Fiona responded loudly, then said to her son, "Eat first, Wade! You'll have the energy to work when you're full!"
"it is good."
Wade smiled and replied, placing the almost completely empty barrel on the windowsill, stamping the snow off his feet, and walking towards the house.
Ferdinand was coming downstairs when he saw his wife, whose nose was red from the cold and whose hair was dusty. He couldn't help but laugh and ask, "What are you doing?"
"I'm helping Wade!"
After Fiona finished speaking, she paused for a moment, then turned to her and said, "Yeah, Wade, what have you been up to so early in the morning?"
—Are you only thinking of asking now?
Ferdinand smiled helplessly and turned his gaze to his son. Wied changed his shoes at the door, dusted himself off, and came in, saying:
"It's a protective spell placed around the house to prevent unauthorized wizards or magical creatures from approaching. Even if they reach the front door, they'll subconsciously ignore that area."
"Wow, that's so cool!" Fiona's eyes lit up as she looked at the "javelin" stuck to the fence, so small they were almost invisible unless you looked closely, and then asked:
"Can I still invite Mr. Moody to my home for dinner?"
“Of course,” Wade said, “as long as you invite him in yourself.”
Then, he glanced meaningfully at his father.
Ferdinand nodded silently—in other words, as long as he and his wife didn't extend an invitation, those dangerous magical creatures would no longer be able to easily break into the house.
He used to occasionally invite core members of his company or important business partners to his home for banquets during holidays. But now it seems that upscale restaurants in the city center are more appropriate.
After the meal, Wade continued his renovation project.
He first extinguished the fireplace in the living room, then used a "clean-up" tool to remove the firewood and ash, leaving the old red bricks completely exposed.
Then, Vader held his wand, and a thin golden light emanated from the tip of the wand, carving a circle of runes on the brickwork of the fireplace.
The moment it was completed, the engravings seemed to be ignited from within by an invisible flame, each one glowing with a golden-red light, like scorching lava that circled the gaps. Then the light disappeared, leaving only a circle of dark gray, fine marks.
“This fireplace will no longer be able to be connected to the Floo Network,” Vader explained to his parents. “And there’s no need to worry about wizards suddenly popping out of it.”
“Oh…” Fiona said with some regret, “I’ve always wanted to try out what it’s like to use the Floo Network… and if that happens, you won’t be able to Floo back either.”
“I can Apparate, Mom,” Wade blinked, his tone light. “And don’t you think flying back would be cooler?”
Fiona's eyes crinkled into a smile: "You're right... By the way, the coffee's freshly brewed, Wade, would you like a cup?"
After the living room, Wade did the same to the fireplace in the study, not only prohibiting access to the Floo network, but also issuing an alarm to anyone who tried to forcibly connect to the fireplace, no matter where he was.
Next are the windows.
His fingers traced intricate patterns on the glass as he chanted a spell. After a faint flash of silver light, the glass became less transparent, and those outside could no longer see the people inside the room, only the blurry outlines of furniture.
In the afternoon, Wade moved to the garden, where he buried things at the base of the roses and beside the cobblestone path—sometimes palm-sized cloth bags, sometimes a few seeds.
Ferdinand rummaged through the storeroom for a hoe to help dig the hole, while Fiona busied herself handing out water, wiping away sweat, and fetching various tools.
When her help wasn't needed, she wouldn't go inside; instead, she would gather her clothes and squat beside the father and son, watching them work.
Without magic, she couldn't understand the spells Vader cast, nor could she sense the strange changes in the house during the process.
But as she gazed at her son's focused profile, watching him calmly and skillfully handle those seemingly complicated "safety measures," a gentle glint gradually appeared in Fiona's eyes.
“My little Wade has really grown up,” she whispered to her husband. “Look at him, he’s become so reliable, so capable…”
She paused for a moment, then said softly, "...So no matter how the situation outside changes, he can definitely handle it and protect himself, right?"
I had something to do last night, so I'll make up for the update today.
