Chapter 935
The Dream Weaver
Chapter 935 The Dream Weaver
Abigail froze completely.
Her mind went blank; a surge of emotion overwhelmed her, leaving her completely lost.
Finally, all her thoughts collapsed into a blank, dazed state, except for Braun's words, which pierced straight into the deepest recesses of her consciousness like an icicle.
Do the memories and thoughts in your mind truly belong to you?
She tried to recall, but those "memories" about her family, her upbringing, and why she joined the Purge suddenly became blurry and questionable.
It's like looking at a familiar painting through frosted glass; the outline is still there, but the details are a blur.
The more she tried to see clearly, the more blurred and questionable her memory became.
Most people have unclear memories of their childhood, and if their memories of adolescence are monotonous and repetitive, they may also be unclear.
But Abigail's life has been full of ups and downs, and there are many moments that she believes she will never forget.
But at this moment, she remembers the sweat during training, the passion during the oath, and the satisfaction, pain, or remorse after certain tasks...
But what is the underlying tone of these memories?
She couldn't even remember what color her mother's eyes were.
The tasks they performed after adulthood also seemed to have changed...
For example, during her trip to Benevento, Italy, when she mingled with a local witch's gathering, she remembered some fragmented moments, but had no idea what she felt at the time.
Did she laugh when she heard how the witches used magic to torment her husband? ...It seems she did laugh, but she doesn't know if she was truly happy at the time.
Another witch recounted how she used the wrong magic, causing all the furniture to come to life and attack each other wildly, and showed a huge scar on her body that resulted from it.
The grotesque scar, resembling a giant centipede, left a deep impression on Abigail's mind.
What were my feelings at that time?
Abigail asked herself, but she couldn't remember.
She even remembers the feeling of the moonlight shining on her body and the slight coolness of her arms; she remembers the grass under her bottom being a bit prickly, and it only felt better after she put on a soft cushion; she remembers the expressions and voices of everyone at the party.
Her own feelings, however, seemed to be nonexistent.
A chill ran up my spine and spread instantly throughout my body.
Abigail trembled uncontrollably, almost losing her balance. The world swayed and distorted before her eyes; she suddenly couldn't distinguish between what was real and what was fake.
If even memories can be woven and altered, then who exactly is "Sera Abigail"?
How much of what she hated, what she was loyal to, and what she experienced was real?
Braun looked at her distraught, near-collapse state, but his face remained expressionless. His mind flashed back to Vader's instructions to him before they parted—
“Wayne, now that you’re with Abigail, I have something to tell you.”
The boy's voice was not loud, but as steady as ever.
Braun immediately stopped smiling and listened attentively.
"Within the Purifiers, there exists a very special and extremely dangerous wizard."
Vader retrieved the Magical Congress's interrogation files on members of the Purge—files from copies shared by Kingsley.
The Magical Congress had no intention of keeping the Purifiers a secret; in fact, they invited British Aurors to participate in the interrogation in order to provide an explanation for the previous hijacking incident.
Wade's gaze fell on the top of the document, a file where a photograph should have been placed but was completely blank.
"This wizard doesn't directly participate in combat missions, but is specifically responsible for one thing—erasing and altering the memories of members of the Purifier organization."
“Stern’s testimony mentioned this person, whose code name was Dream Weaver, but no one knew his real name.” “Stern said that he had no need to alter his memories, so he never went to see that person on his own initiative, only knowing that the person should be in the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania—perhaps he was also afraid that his memories would be altered without his knowledge.”
"And the other members, even if their minds have been tampered with, will be completely unaware of it. After the magic ends, they may even forget that they ever saw that person."
"It was only when the Magic Congress extracted memories from some of the Purgers' officers that they discovered unnatural traces in their memories."
Vader looked at Braun, his tone serious:
"This person is the key to the Purge's ability to control its members, create fanaticism, and cover up core secrets; he is one of the real culprits."
"But no one has seen him, neither during Thorne's reign nor before or after Brolin's escape."
Braun understood Wiede's concerns and said in a deep voice:
"Whether it's Thorne or Brolin, it doesn't really matter... As long as that wizard is there, he can create a new Purifier organization at any time and make everyone loyal."
Wade nodded and said, “That’s right. And his memory magic is very sophisticated—like Lockhart’s forgetting spell. Perhaps he’s only good at this one spell, but he’s honed it to the highest level.”
Outstanding wizards in the magical world generally possess the skills to forget and confuse, which can directly or indirectly affect memories.
However, most wizards are only capable of affecting memories for a short period of time.
Modifying memories is a highly difficult technique; even a wizard with exceptional magical abilities like Slughorn cannot modify someone's memories on a large scale or for an extended period of time.
The revised clips are always shrouded in mystery, making it easy for people to notice something amiss.
But the wizard among the Purifiers was different; he could make people believe false memories without a doubt, something Vader suspected even Dumbledore couldn't do.
After a pause, Wade said, "So Wayne, your task is to find him."
"Among the Purgers, besides Brolin, Abigail is the most likely person to know that guy's location."
"According to Stern, Abigail's memories have been altered at least four times. Even if she doesn't remember the earlier ones, the most recent one was when the Purge tampered with her memories of her time teaching at Hogwarts."
“At this point, she was no longer an unknown nobody, and her experiences at Hogwarts could not be completely covered up. Those people can’t possibly alter everyone’s memories.”
“So Brolin needs to give her an explanation…” Braun continued, “to let her know that although she lost a part of her memory, it was for her own good, and that she might even have a brief encounter with the wizard who can alter memories.”
Wade gave a faint smile and said:
"Therefore, you need to get her to cooperate willingly for you to have any hope of finding that person. To avoid falling for his tricks when you meet him and forgetting who you are..."
Vader raised his hand and placed it on Braun's forehead, saying, "I will place a 'protective shield' on you, which will protect you from the effects of memory magic three times."
"Remember, you must finish this quickly!"
……
Braun watched as Abigail stumbled and her back hit the cold wall.
She raised her head, her eyes filled with a fragmented emptiness, her voice as soft as a dream:
"Then...who am I...what can I still believe in..."
Braun gazed at her, offering neither comfort nor urging, and after a long while spoke calmly:
"If you want to know the answer, you must first get back what has been taken from you."
"Find it..."
Abigail stared at him blankly, her disordered breathing gradually calming down. Her unfocused gaze seemed to be slowly gathered and focused by an invisible force.
She trembled slightly, her voice broken and filled with gritted teeth as she said, "Dream Weaver!"
