Chapter 763
Departure for New York
Chapter 763 Departure for New York
A light mist hung over the streets in the early morning. Pedestrians, some wrapped in scarves and others wearing light jackets, hurried along the streets.
Perhaps because most people were wearing dark clothes, this rare rainless morning seemed gloomy.
Wade, carrying what appeared to be an ordinary suitcase, dressed in all black with a long coat over his shoulders, arrived at the airport on time.
Alastor Moody walked beside him, his demonic eye covered by a black eyepatch. Beneath the fabric, the demonic eye constantly scanned everything around it, not missing even the slightest fluctuation in the air.
Meanwhile, Remus walked over quickly with several plane tickets in his hand, a look of relief on his face.
"Luckily, I learned how to buy plane tickets beforehand." He nodded slightly to the two of them and sighed, "The process is really troublesome. I really don't understand how those Muggles manage to figure out something so complicated."
Wade sighed and said, "Remus, you should have told me sooner... Not many people buy tickets at the airport; they usually buy them from travel agencies."
"Travel agency?" Remus asked, puzzled. "Why? I thought plane tickets should be bought at the airport."
"Because airport tickets are all full price, which is several times more expensive than booking through a travel agency, and the seats are the ones that other people have left over."
As for discount stores, let's not talk about these "tricks" that require more time and effort, because two adult wizards would certainly find them even more difficult to understand.
Wade took his ticket, checked it discreetly, and then breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, Remus did not buy the wrong flight ticket.
He put away his plane ticket and walked toward the baggage check-in counter, with the two adult wizards following in sync, maintaining a wary yet not abrupt distance.
“This place is ridiculously big!” Remus exclaimed, looking around the terminal. “And it’s packed with Muggles from all over the world…it’s incredible.”
Moody kept his face tightly shut, and everyone who passed by looked curiously at his cane and prosthetic leg, then at his eyes covered by an eye patch, and finally was startled by the scars all over his face.
"Hey, don't look so naive!" Moody yelled fiercely at a young man staring at him. "Never seen a veteran from the battlefield before?"
The young man hurriedly looked away and walked away from them. Moody muttered angrily, "Rude Muggles! They really need to learn what respect is!"
His prosthetic leg slammed heavily on the ground as he limped behind Wade, his eyes darting in different directions—towards the buzzing machines, the security guards with weapons on their belts, and a child crying on a bench in the distance.
He was like an old wolf trapped in unfamiliar territory, and everything around him seemed to make him nervous.
Even Remus next to him was stiffer than usual, frowning, his fingers unconsciously curling and relaxing repeatedly.
Unlike Moody, whose gaze swept across the surroundings, his eyes were cautiously focused, using the corner of his eye to catch any sudden changes in his surroundings.
Wade keenly realized that whether the two people around him showed surprise or rudeness, it actually stemmed from their wariness of the huge, noisy, and unfamiliar environment that operated with a logic that neither of them could understand.
So, while waiting in line to check in his luggage, Wade turned to the two of them and asked in a low voice:
"To be honest, I've found it a bit strange the whole way—why didn't we choose the 'more economical way' to get to New York?" Moody shook his head, glancing around, and said in a low voice, "The British Floo network can't connect to America! Besides, the Magic Congress there has a powerful magical surveillance system; any unfamiliar Portkey fluctuations would be detected immediately! We'd be waiting to go to jail then!"
“Can’t we apply to the Ministry of Magic for a cross-border Portkey?” Vader asked.
Wizards generally can't stand the slow and cumbersome travel methods of Muggles, so Theo and his family always apply for a Portkey before traveling abroad, which is also an important source of income for the Ministry of Magic.
Vader suspects that a large part of the reason the Ministry of Magic strictly controls Portkeys and prohibits the unauthorized manufacture and activation of Portkeys is to generate revenue for itself.
After all... it is well known that the various laws and regulations of the British Ministry of Magic have never truly restrained those dangerous dark wizards.
"Hmph! Once you use that thing, your destination will be completely under someone else's control!"
Moody warned, "I know a guy who bought a door key at a high price while on the run, only to be sent to a dark wizard's lair. When the Aurors found him, he was already torn to pieces!"
"Wade, you must remember this from now on—never trust anyone who gives you anything like this, except for a door key that you made yourself!"
"And what about Dumbledore?" Wade asked deliberately, touching the pendant hanging around his neck through his clothes.
Moody was momentarily speechless. His magical eyes darted around several times under his blindfold before he finally spoke:
"Okay... he's an exception, of course! But it's precisely because of him that you need to be extra careful—there are many people who go to great lengths to imitate him or forge his things, and it's possible that someone might use that method against you!"
"Therefore, you can trust Dumbledore, and that doesn't contradict the fact that you need to personally verify the safety of anything he gives you! When it comes to things that concern your life, you must be extremely careful and never be careless!"
A middle-aged man behind them couldn't help but chuckle, and Moody immediately glared at him fiercely.
He forgot to lower his voice as he spoke, and the group didn't use any soundproofing spells—the Secret Law stipulates that magic cannot be used in public places where Muggles gather—but Moody didn't care whether the Muggles could hear him or not, because he knew they wouldn't understand.
But that doesn't mean he wouldn't mind if others laughed at him or at Dumbledore.
The man's companion quickly tugged at his sleeve, smiled somewhat embarrassedly at the group, and the middle-aged man also quickly made an apologetic gesture.
After Moody turned around, he whispered to his companion:
"Haha...did you hear that? They're making a life-or-death situation out of a key, and you have to make your own copy...it's hilarious...what is this? Paranoia?"
His voice wasn't loud, but all three of them had excellent hearing, so they all heard it and then fell silent for a moment.
“Ignore these stupid Muggles!” Moody scoffed. “They don’t understand anything.”
“Wade,” Remus skipped the topic and gently reminded him, “it’s time to move on.”
