Chapter 483
Farewell
Chapter 483 Farewell
There are unfinished books on the table, and next to them there are bookmarks that I made myself using hippogriff feathers. There are plush dolls and teddy bears on the bed, and the landscape posters on the wall that are occasionally waved have to be rolled up.
Mabel originally thought that she had not lived here for very long and should have very little luggage, but when she started packing, she found that there were already so many traces of her life here.
Fortunately, Wade cast a traceless extension spell on the box in her hand, and the space was expanded three times, so she could put all the things in it and it didn't feel heavy to lift.
Mabel finally picked up the picture frame on the table.
It was a weekend afternoon in Hogsmeade. Wade, Harry, Michael and others all came to Lupin's house to play. Wade also brought his camera and took a lot of photos for everyone. This is one of the group photos.
Because Mabel was not familiar with the others, she originally planned to be the one to take pictures for everyone, but Michael pulled her to sit on the sofa.
So in the photo, the girl sitting in the middle has a surprised and shy smile on her face, and she is surrounded by several energetic young wizards.
Lupin was at the back, leaning against the back of the sofa with his arms outstretched, as if he wanted to protect everyone under his wings.
Mabel looked at the photo and couldn't help but smile, then she carefully put it into the compartment of the box.
She took one last look around the bedroom where she had lived for the past few months and felt that every corner held many beautiful memories.
There was reluctance in the girl's eyes, but it was soon replaced by relief and joy. She put on her hat, picked up her suitcase, and walked down the stairs briskly.
The sofa in the living room was exactly the same as in the photo, and Vader and Lupin were sitting on the sofa chatting.
"Going to Privet Drive tomorrow?" Weed asked.
"Yeah, Sirius hasn't been able to spare the time lately, but Harry still has to stay at the Dursleys' for two weeks."
Lupin sighed and said, "They are implementing some kind of 'weight loss program', but I doubt they really want to starve Harry to death. If I don't go, he will basically only have a handful of grass to eat every day."
It sounded miserable, but Wade couldn't help but laugh.
"Isn't Harry rich? He can buy his own food, why should he suffer that?"
"Harry paying for his own shopping? That would drive the Dursleys crazy! They are the most unreasonable Muggles I have ever met. There are more rules and regulations in their house than in church."
Lupin shook his head and said helplessly.
Just as he finished speaking, he heard footsteps coming from the stairs. He turned around and saw Mabel coming down from upstairs in a ruffled shirt and light green pleated skirt, looking fresh and cute.
Lupin stopped talking for a moment, looking at the child whom he almost treated as a daughter, who was finally ready to leave, his eyes full of reluctance.
"Mabel, is everything packed?" Wade asked.
"Of course." Mabel smiled and said to Lupin, "Remus, thank you for taking care of me all the time."
"Nothing." Lupin said softly, "Take care of yourself over there... You know you're always welcome to come back. This place will always be your home."
"Ah."
Mabel nodded vigorously, sniffled, and walked forward to hug Lupin.
"Goodbye, Remus," she whispered, choking back tears.
Lupin stroked the girl's smooth hair and reminded her, "Keep in touch... If anyone bullies you, tell me immediately."
……
The carriage swayed away from Hogsmeade. Mabel turned around and looked at the little pointed-roof cottage getting farther and farther away. Finally, she couldn't help shedding a few tears.
Wade handed over the handkerchief and said gently, "You know, there's no need for you to leave in a hurry."
"I'm afraid the longer I stay here, the more reluctant I will be to leave."
Mabel wiped her tears, tried to smile, and said, "Besides, I have to adapt to the life of ordinary people!"
Wade sighed in his heart, remained silent, and his thoughts went back to two weeks ago.
After separating from the Obscurus, Mabel's weak body could not recover immediately. Madam Pomfrey asked her to take two bottles of potion every day, and Dumbledore also asked Fawkes to come once.
When the golden-red phoenix saw Mabel, it shed two tears with dignity to help her recover.
Wade never saw the separated Obscurus again, because it was put into Scamander's suitcase that day. It is said that Dumbledore and Scamander have been studying that thing during this period.
On the third day, at the urging of Hayley's adoptive parents, the two sisters had to say goodbye, and Lupin sent the little girl home.
On the seventh day, Scamander checked again and confirmed that the dark power of the Obscurus had completely disappeared from Mabel's body.
But at the same time, Mabel seemed to have lost her magical powers.
She had learned quite a few basic spells before, but when she picked up the wand again, it was like a dud, and she couldn't cast any magic. Only occasionally could she make a few sparks come out from the tip of the wand.
Dumbledore contacted the Ministry of Magic, and many officials from the Ministry of Magic came and went, almost wearing down the gravel road in front of Lupin's house. Finally, two days later, the wanted warrant for Mabel was withdrawn.
What followed was a flood of reports in the Daily Prophet, with headlines such as "Unprecedented Breakthrough" and "The First Obscurial to be Cured".
Many reporters wanted to interview the "miracle girl" Mabel, but Wade contacted FMC [Marchione's media company] and Dumbledore to stop this trend. Under the guidance of FMC, the focus of media reports was on Scamander and Dumbledore who created this miracle.
The two men have sufficient experience in dealing with the media. As long as they don't have that idea themselves, the reporters can't even catch their shadows. So they don't worry about being harassed by those people.
However, when Weed caught a familiar beetle from the oak tree outside the door, everyone realized that the media had not really let go of Mabel's hot spot, at least not a persistent reporter like Rita Skeeter.
Especially since Mabel no longer had any magical ability, it would be completely harmful and useless for her to continue staying in the wizarding village of Hogsmeade and in the Lupin family home whose address had been exposed.
Lupin originally planned to send Mabel to Privet Drive. Sirius also bought a house there, and that area was under the strict protection of the Ministry of Magic, so there was basically no need to worry about Mabel's safety.
But before that, a letter arrived at Lupin's house.
This letter came from Hayley's adoptive parents, who sent it to her through Professor Sprout. On the letter paper, they wrote their expectations and requests for adopting Mabel.
The kind couple heard their story from Haley, and even though they had never met her, they had already developed great liking and pity for Mabel.
They learned from the Daily Prophet that Mabel might have become a Squib, so they carefully sent the letter, detailing the family's economic conditions and housing conditions, nearby schools and hospitals, to prove that Mabel would not be wronged at all in their home. Of course, the most important thing for Mabel was that Haley was there.
……
The Thestral sneezed, shook its tail, stretched its bat-like wings, and trotted briskly.
Mabel could naturally see the Thestral's appearance, and she asked curiously, "Are all horses in the magical world like this?"
"This is a Thestral. They are relatively ugly among Pegasus, but they are very smart, loyal, and have a good sense of direction."
"In Beauxbatons, which is another magic school, there are many rune horses," said Vader. "The fur is white or light gold, and they are very beautiful."
"Are there many magic schools in the world?" Mabel asked curiously.
"There are eleven schools like Hogwarts, and some small training institutions."
Wade said, "After school starts this year, there may be many students from other schools coming to Hogwarts to participate in an event. It will be very lively. Do you want to come? We can pick you up and come over to play."
Mabel had a fascinated expression, but after thinking for a moment, she smiled and shook her head.
"It sounds interesting... but forget it. I've decided to leave. If I come back often, I'm afraid I'll regret it."
Mabel turned her head, looked at Wade and said, "Besides, there are many wonderful things in the society of ordinary people! I have actually been looking forward to it for a long time. I want to know what it feels like to go to school... If I stay in the wizarding world, I will never be able to go to school."
Vader couldn't help but nod in agreement, feeling that this girl was really very sober.
"Then you might want to make up for it in advance," Weider suggested. "You've never been to school before, so you'll definitely feel uncomfortable at first... If you preview the textbook first, at least you'll be able to understand what the teacher is saying."
"You're right." Mabel instantly forgot her regret about leaving the wizarding world and said nervously, "I can't go to school from the first grade at my age, right? Will the things I have to learn be difficult?"
Vader: “…”
Mabel should be in middle school at this age, and that level of difficulty is not even enough for Wade to warm up, but Mabel has been experimented on in the organization's research institute for as long as she can remember...
The two looked at each other for a while, and while there were still more than ten minutes before the carriage arrived, Wade first taught Mabel some mathematics.
Other subjects can be learned slowly, but mathematics must be based on a solid foundation. When Wade was in primary school here, he saw how his classmates were troubled by mathematics.
So Mabel spent the rest of the time reciting the addition table, and then the multiplication table, mumbling something to herself as if she were chanting a spell.
After a few minutes, Wade wondered if he was forcing things too far, because Maybelle was vaguely stuck in a "Ma what Mei" cycle, randomly grafting addition and multiplication tables together from time to time.
The British multiplication table is still a multiplication relationship within 12. In addition, due to the language difference, it is impossible to form a rhyme-like memorization habit like Chinese, which makes learning even more difficult.
When it was time to get off the train, the girl's eyes were almost swirling. The two of them took a taxi and when they arrived at the nearby Muggle train station, she was still muttering, "Five-six-thirty-five? No, five-six-one? Wait...it seems to be twenty-seven?"
"Mabel." Wade patted the girl's shoulder and raised her chin so that she could look forward.
Mabel immediately broke free from her mathematical hell and saw Haley jumping and waving at her not far away.
Next to the little girl stood a fat middle-aged man in a gray suit. He had a simple and gentle smile on his face and was looking at Mabel.
Mabel paused and turned to look at Wade.
"Go ahead." Wade looked at her encouragingly and said, "Keep in touch."
Mabel nodded, mustered up her courage, and walked towards the two people over there with her suitcase.
Wade watched Mabel walk over, watched her hug Hayley, and shyly greet her future adoptive father.
The man leaned over to help her lift the suitcase, and watched the two sisters chatting and laughing as they walked onto the train with a smile on their face.
Before getting on the train, Mabel turned around and waved vigorously to Wade. Wade also smiled and waved, watching their backs disappear from the door of the carriage.
Then he sighed, looked to the side helplessly, and asked, "If you don't want to leave, why don't you show up? Mabel must have wanted to see you just now."
"This is not good for her... She has a new family now." Lupin's voice came through the air muffled: "If she keeps clinging to her old family, she won't be able to integrate into the new family."
"So you turned invisible and hid beside her to cry secretly, Mother Lupin?" Wade laughed, "This is not a life-and-death separation. If you miss her, you can go see her anytime."
"That's different," Lupin murmured, and you could tell from his voice that he was sad.
Vader found it very amusing.
The original Lupin seems to be a person with more repressed and obscure emotions.
When he was teaching at Hogwarts despite his werewolf identity and Snape's suspicion, he never showed that he was a close friend of Harry's father. He even rarely visited Harry until his death, and rarely showed his vulnerable side in front of the children.
He is a reliable but low-key elder, whose whereabouts are mysterious and only appears occasionally when Harry needs him.
But the Lupin that Wade knew was not troubled by his poor life, and only a few people around him knew his identity as a werewolf, and everyone thought it was not a big problem.
This Lupin can express his concern for everyone around him more naturally and frankly, and because he thinks too much, he sometimes even seems too fussy.
The train had already departed, and the people who were seeing it off on the platform gradually dispersed. Wade turned and walked towards the exit.
"Let's go."
"Okay." Lupin said, "I'll take you home first."
"No, let's go visit Harry." Wade said jokingly, "See if he has turned into a rabbit by eating grass every day."
……
On the desolate hillside, a black dog slowly stood up. Its figure hidden in the bushes almost blended into the darkness, with only a pair of sharp eyes shining.
After staring at the two men for so long, he saw the gray-yellow rat appear next to them for the first time.
